North Carver - After years of waiting the long awaited new 6 1/2 mile Route 44 is open. I was among residents, media, members of local, state and federal government for the opening ceremony. Frank R Mazzilli has been waiting for many years for this day to happen. He was one of the first to put this idea on the table years ago. In his honor the state of Massachusetts has named the bridge that crosses over Route 58 in North Carver, MA after him.

Wednesday, December 14, 2005 is a day that will be marked in history joining the east to the west for Southeastern Massachusetts residents. This well built highway will bring money to local businesses in Carver, Plympton, Kingston, and Plymouth.

I’m thankful to take part in this day in history and having the ability to share it with all my readers of the Southeastern Massachusetts Scanner Blog. My hope is to bring you more in-depth reporting of the happenings in Southeastern Massachusetts.

Evacuations in Taunton because of concerns about dam

TAUNTON, Mass. --About 2,000 people in Taunton were being evacuated Monday afternoon because a dam was buckling, threatening to flood neighborhoods downstream.
Emergency management officials said the Whittendon Pond Dam on the Mill River was in danger of failing. Mayor Robert Nunes declared a state of emergency around 3 p.m. and told residents who live near the river to head to a shelter in the field house at Taunton High School.
"We have seen additional buckling (of the dam) over the last hour or so," Nunes said around 4:30 p.m. "There is no flooding yet, but the water levels are rising quickly."
Police officers and firefighters were knocking on doors and urging residents near the dam to evacuate, Nunes said... Read more from Boston.com '

Fire disrupts dinner hour at Wareham Friendly's

WAREHAM -- It was all smoke and ice cream at the Friendly's off Cranberry Highway last night, when a fire shut down the restaurant during suppertime. No one was injured, and the cause of the fire, unknown, firefighters said.

The damage was primarily limited to the restaurant's attic, where smoke had gathered, Wareham Fire District Chief Robert McDuffy added. Firefighters had to puncture three holes in the roof to allow the smoke to escape.

"All I saw was smoke coming out of the top of the restaurant," said one bystander, Mike Page, who arrived just after 6:30 p.m. to eat. "My stomach was growling, but I don't think I saw any flames." Friendly's employees, working when the fire broke out, refused to comment.

The Wareham Fire Department's two engines, one ladder and EMS workers responded at 6:25 p.m. when they received a call from Friendly's alarm company, Chief McDuffy said. When they arrived, EMS workers said they saw smoke emerging from the restaurant's cupola. "There was no smoke in the main floor. Everything was in the attic," Chief McDuffy said.

It was unclear last night if the restaurant would be open for business in the coming days. The Wareham Fire Department is currently investigating the incident. But as they investigated, they also received complimentary ice cream. Friendly's employees gave the firefighters several boxes of butter pecan, cookies and cream and vanilla yogurt to thank them for their efforts.

Police catch suspected bank robber

After a lengthy car chase, police captured suspected bank robber Kevin Donovan in a Randolph housing development last night.

Donovan, the 34-year-old son of Rockland Police Chief Kevin M. Donovan, had been the subject of a manhunt this week for his suspected role in a series of bank robberies, including one Tuesday in Raynham at HarborOne Credit Union.

Yesterday afternoon, State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth district attorney's office warned police in the Brockton area to look for Donovan and provided a description of the green Honda he might be driving, said State Trooper Thomas Ryan.

Trooper Kathleen Sampson spotted Donovan at a Mobil gas station on Route 123 in Brockton shortly before 8:30 p.m. When Donovan saw Sampson in the parking lot, he fled, and Sampson called for backup.
State Police pursued Donovan onto Route 24 and Route 139 into Randolph. Troopers briefly lost sight of the suspect, but the vehicle was later located, abandoned at Pelissier Circle in the Highland Glen apartment complex.

State Police, along with Randolph Police and the State Air Wing, set up a perimeter, and after a short search, found Donovan in a laundry room at the apartment complex, allegedly hiding.

Donovan was handed over to Brockton Police, who had an outstanding warrant for him in a recent bank robbery. Donovan was held overnight, pending arraignment this morning.

Bare Cove Park consists of 469 acres located along the banks of the Weymouth Back River in the town of Hingham, MA.

New details - from Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz

The two male bodies found in Bare Cove Park.
Both men were found inside an abandoned World War I ammunition bunker.
Officials said that the bodies are those of two homeless people.
One body decomposed and the other has blunt force trama to his face (in his 40s or 50s).

Fire rescue drill to be held tomorrow

LAKEVILLE -- Postponed last weekend due to rain, the burning of the Garrish House as a Fire Department training exercise is set for this weekend. Tomorrow, the Lakeville Fire Department will light small fires in the rooms to practice search and rescue. The Quincy-based National Fire Protection Association plans to film the exercises. On Sunday, firefighters will burn the town-owned house to the ground, starting at 8 a.m. or shortly thereafter. The drills are not mandatory. Full-time and call firefighters have been invited. They plan to use a sprayed foam to protect surrounding trees from catching fire. Until recently, the town rented the Precinct Street house as a residence, but Town Meeting approved demolishing it because the house had fallen into disrepair. The Historical Commission did not object. Historical accounts say the house was built overlooking Loon Pond for a man named Orville Gerrish or Garrish. It was later moved to Precinct Street. The town acquired the house with the purchase of the Ted Williams Camp for a public park in the 1980s.
